Judy Sugarman
Meet The Little Orchestra Society's Principal String Bass, Judith Sugarman! Judith studied as a scholarship student of Homer Mensch at the Julliard School in both the pre-college and college divisions. She has held position of principal bass for the Little Orchestra Society. The EOS Orchestra, Solisti New York, Concordia, The Stamford Symphony and the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey. In addition, she has frequently performed as acting principal bass with The Brooklyn Philharmonic, The Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, and The New York Chamber Society.
Active in the world of commercial music, Ms. Sugarman's playing can be heard on such films as "Kramer vs. Kramer", "Sphere", "You've Got Mail", "Cape Fear", "The Birdcage", "Marvin's Room", and "Mulan" among many others. She has recorded hundreds of TV and radio commercials and can be heard on CDs and music videos with such artists as varied as The Three Tenors, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Elton John, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Areatha Franklin, and P Diddy. Past seasons highlights included performances on The David Letterman Show, Saturday Night Live and a performance for President and Mrs. Clinton at the White House. This past season Ms. Sugarman was seen and heard on National Public Television's Copland's Biography and will be seen again in August of 2005 on Public Television's Live from Lincoln Center broadcast featuring The Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra.
In addition to her performing activities, Judith has been on the faculty of the Julliard School since 1999, first with the Music Advancement Program, Julliard's educational outreach program and this season on the Julliard Pre-College faculty.
Ms. Sugarman was the solo bassist for the Steven Sondheim musical Passion as well as the solo bassist in the most recent Broadway production of Leonard Bernstein's Candide.
Judith Sugarman's chamber music activities have included performances with the Guaneri String Quartet, members of the New York Philharmonic, and with the Sylvan Winds.
To quote Ms. Sugarman, "It is a gift and privilege to be able to make a living doing what I love. My hope is that my involvement with The Little Orchestra Society will encourage children and young adults love of music, passion towards music, for their entire lives. Performing is a way of "giving service' to our young people."
Aside from music, Ms. Sugarman is passionate about saltwater fishing. "It's not aerobic, but it is a sport!"
